Promoting Good Governance

We are cognisant of the foundational value of good governance to the development of the Kenyan society. The National Values and Principles in the Constitution of Kenya 2010, as the enablers of a prosperous society that respects the rule of law and human dignity, can only have a meaningful impact in an environment of good governance. This concept is particularly significant in light of Kenya‘s transformative devolved system of governance, which has opened up many parts of Kenya, including the ASALs. The promise of good governance thus embodies the aspirations of Kenyans for a cohesive society founded on the rule of law, human dignity, democracy, transparency, accountability, and social justice.

We champion good governance based on constitutional values and principles as well as global best practices. Besides providing advisory services and technical support on policy and legislative matters, we focus on building the capacity of various stakeholders to practice and demand good governance. Our interventions include conducting targeted training and civic education to enhance the capacity of duty bearers to perform their responsibilities and empower the public to participate meaningfully in governance processes. In addition, in appreciation of the uniqueness of the ASALs and the emerging regional challenges, we work with various stakeholders to promote conflict management and peacebuilding among communities in the ASALs.

Climate change is not a distant threat but a daily reality in the ASALs of Kenya. ASALs have borne the brunt of climate change, ranging from prolonged droughts to severe floods that have disrupted traditional livelihoods and exacerbated the existing vulnerabilities.
