Climate Change, Cultural Heritage and Indeginous Knowledge Management
In Kenya’s ASAL regions, cultural heritage is deeply intertwined with the environment. Indigenous practices,
knowledge, and beliefs have evolved over centuries in response to the unique challenges and opportunities in the arid and semi-arid landscapes. However, climate change poses a significant threat to this rich cultural
tapestry. Shifting weather patterns, extreme weather events, and resource scarcity disrupt traditional livelihoods
and undermine cultural practices that depend on a stable environment.
ODA recognises that cultural preservation is not only about safeguarding the past but also about building resilience for the future. We work with communities to document and revitalise traditional ecological knowledge, which holds valuable insights into sustainable resource management and climate adaptation. We support cultural practices that promote environmental stewardship, such as agroforestry and rainwater harvesting. We also work to adapt cultural heritage sites and traditions to the changing climate, ensuring that they can continue to inspire and capacity build future generations. At ODA, we acknowledge the interconnectedness of culture and environment, and believe this can foster a holistic approach to climate resilience that values both the tangible and intangible heritage of ASAL communities.

This pillar aims to empower women, youth, and persons with disabilities to participate in climate action and decision-making processes. It recognises that these groups are disproportionately affected by climate change and that their inclusion in decision-making, capacity building, and climate action is essential for equitable and sustainable solutions.
This pillar aims to improve access to clean water and sanitation facilities that are resilient to climate change impacts such as prolonged drought and floods. It recognises that climate-induced water scarcity and contamination are major challenges in ASAL regions.
This pillar emphasizes Research, Learning, Capacity Strengthening, and Innovation. ODA’s contribution to climate adaptation and mitigation, as well as efforts to build resilience among the ASAL communities is backed by data, research and local evidence.

Tackle climate-driven conflict risks by combining conflict-sensitive adaptation (e.g., shared water governance), resource equity (participatory land planning), climate-smart livelihoods (regenerative agriculture), early warning systems and policy integration (national/regional climate-security frameworks) to build resilience in fragile regions.
